A TEA GATHERING TO WELCOME THE NEW YEAR
A Special Sencha Cultural Experience with Bunjinkai Issa-an
At Nijiri, we are pleased to present a special cultural event welcoming Bunjinkai Issa-an,
a group based in Osaka that carries forward the refined world of poetry, calligraphy, and painting through the tradition of sencha.
Rooted in the intellectual and artistic heritage passed down since the late Edo period, Issa-an bridges classical culture with the contemporary spirit.
Inspired by the zodiac sign of the Year of the Horse, this event is themed “From a Single Drop of Tea, We Pray for Auspicious Fortune.”
With the heartfelt wish for “a year in which everything goes smoothly,” we invite you to experience a moment of quiet celebration and reflection.
Details
- Thursday, January 22
- Two sessions: 11:30 / 14:30 (each session approximately 2 hours)

A Journey Through the World of the Literati
The culinary offerings are created around the theme of auspiciousness, featuring dishes prepared with ingredients and symbolism associated with good fortune.
Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese osechi cuisine and the Chinese Lunar New Year, each plate gently yet vividly expresses prayers for prosperity and renewal.
As you savor sencha and gyokuro, immerse yourself in the stories embodied in carefully selected hanging scrolls and tea utensils, and encounter the refined aesthetic sensibilities of tea practitioners.
Enjoy a serene and elegant afternoon at Nijiri, where you may reflect upon the past and offer prayers for happiness in the year ahead.
Acclaimed tea artisan
Azusa Tsukuda, a successor of Japanese sencha culture from Issa-an.
Based in Osaka, he is the heir to Bunjinkai Issa-an, a sencha school that has preserved and passed down the traditions of sencha culture since the late Edo period.
He studied under his father, Ikki Tsukuda, learning not only the formal practices of sencha but also the spirit of enjoying tea alongside literati culture such as poetry, calligraphy, and painting.
Through sencha gatherings, lectures, and special events, he continues to present an approach to sencha that is deeply rooted in tradition while resonating with contemporary sensibilities.
